Coventry City are at risk of losing some key players at the end of the season#

HIGHLIGHTS

  •  Coventry City could lose key players at the end of the season as three stars are out of contract.
  •  Club captain Liam Kelly’s experience and influence could be crucial in Coventry’s promotion push, so the club may want to keep him on a new deal.
  •  Goalkeeper Simon Moore is unlikely to be offered a contract extension, with Brad Collins and Ben Wilson preferred, leading to his likely departure from the club, while they’d surely love to keep hold of Callum O’Hare.

With three stars having contracts that expire at the end of the current campaign, Coventry City may lose a few of their key players at the end of the season.

The Sky Blues have proven themselves to be formidable this season, and if they can maintain their current level of play into the second half of the Championship, they should be able to secure back-to-back top six finishes.

However, with three of their first-team squad’s contracts expiring at the end of the season, that might be difficult given the uncertainty surrounding the futures of some important players.

Some of these players may decide to sign new contracts with Coventry depending on whether the team can get promoted to the Premier League.

Liam Kelly

Club captain Liam Kelly may be hoping to hang on to him for a little while longer if they can, but he could leave the team in the summer on a free transfer.

The 33-year-old is under contract through the summer of 2024 after he inked a new one-year extension last season.

Even though he is nearing the end of his career, his leadership skills as the club captain could come in handy in their promotion campaign, and keeping him around could inspire the team even more in the years to come.

Kelly has only participated in eight Championship games in 2023–2024, but Coventry will probably be hoping he can make it after his significant contributions to the team’s play-off final appearance in the upcoming seasons once more.

Simon Moore

Goalkeeper Simon Moore is one player who is unlikely to receive a new contract offer in the summer and may soon be leaving the Coventry Building Society Arena.

The 2021 signing of the former keeper for Bristol City and Cardiff City has had no impact on the team this season. He hasn’t played a single minute for the Sky Blues in the Championship and has only once been used as a substitute.

It is unlikely that he will be offered a new contract, so anticipate the 33-year-old leaving the team at the end of the current campaign. Brad Collins and Ben Wilson are Coventry’s preferred goalkeepers, and Moore won’t have a chance to persuade Robins to change his mind.

His 2021 contract, which he signed for three years, expires in the summer, and the Sky Blues might be glad to have him removed from the payroll.

Callum O’Hare

Callum O’Hare, one of Coventry’s best players this year, has not yet agreed to a contract extension with the team, so he could be leaving in the summer.

There are just six months remaining on O’Hare’s current contract, so some were surprised that the team did not sign him in January despite reports that O’Hare was being pursued by several La Liga and Premier League teams.

However, holding onto the playmaker is good for the Sky Blues’ chances of getting promoted, and getting to the Premier League might be necessary to persuade him to sign a new deal.

Even though they made a fool of themselves by giving him an 18-month contract last year, the Sky Blues would suffer a great loss if he were to depart. Since then, he has developed into one of the team’s best players and an essential member of Robins’ squad.
