Coventry City boss issues message over foreign imports of players

Coventry City news from CoventryLive: In light of the Haji Wright transfer link, Sky Blues manager Mark Robins encourages fans to remain with the team’s new additions.

Haji Wright, who cost the club a record £7.7 million to sign from Turkish side Antalyaspor, is among those who have yet to establish a career at Sky Blues. He has scored two goals thus far, but has also drawn criticism from some fans on social media who voiced their dissatisfaction following Wednesday night’s generally subpar team performance from City in the 2-0 loss at struggling Rotherham United. Mark Robins has urged Coventry City fans to stick with the club’s summer signings who are still acclimate, especially the ones who have arrived from overseas.

On X, formerly known as Twitter, Turkish publication Futboo.com has reported that Fenerbahce has inquired about the availability of the USA international during the upcoming January transfer window. “Fenerbahçe had a meeting with the manager of Haji Wright, who was transferred from Antalyaspor to Coventry City for a transfer fee of €9 million, and asked about the transfer conditions,” the @futboocom X account, which has more than 36,000 followers, stated.

Conversely, Robins asserts: “We need to constantly remind ourselves that there is a lot of positivity.” All is well. All we could have wanted was to win more football games. We should have won more, but we have participated in every one thus far. That will happen; in the meanwhile, we just need to make sure that everyone perseveres and that confidence doesn’t decline.

He added: “Clearly, the players are new, many have come from abroad and we need the supporters to stay with it and stick with them to help them through because if not things will change pretty quickly the other way. They are human beings and some of them have come in and never experienced this division.

“They have got to learn about it and get used to it, and they will do that. That’s the thing that takes the time and that’s why I refer to it as a process. It’s just something we have got to go through to get them to the level. We are by far and away better in terms of the depth at the moment, although we are not finished and have to add to that because there are still areas we need to improve, and we will always do that. But at the moment we have to work towards to getting it fine tuned, and that’s what we’re working towards.”

Asked if Wright comes into that category, coming from Turkish football and various European clubs after starting out in American, the manager said: “You come from all walks of life, different cultures and environments, and here is totally different. There is a totally different culture in each dressing room at each club, and our club is moving forwards. It’s moving in a different direction to what it was previously, financially. So the training ground work is continuing and makes for a better environment to work and we have got better players on the back of that who are young quality but still possibly a little bit unsure. But, again, we are not too far away and it’s frustrating.”

Asked about the speculation linking Wright with interest from Fenerbahce, and whether there has been any contact or inquires from Turkey ahead of the January window, Robins flatly dismissed the claims, simply saying: “No.”
