Coventry City won’t see Sakamoto again this season as Monday just got bigger”

Coventry City slipped to eighth place in the Championship in what was, without doubt, their worst performance of the season, going down 3-0 to a bullish Preston North End side at the CBS Arena.

With just 58 seconds remaining, the Sky Blues gave up a goal from a training ground routine, giving them the worst possible start. Things only got worse when they allowed in another goal in the 20th minute and witnessed a guy being stretchered off at the half-hour mark. And the game was all but over when, seven minutes before the half, Bobby Thomas’ own goal gave them a third goal.

Reporter Andy Turner of the Sky Blues examines some of the key talking points from a very forgettable performance at home.

Preston North End is perhaps Coventry City’s worst opponent. As if never winning a league game at Deepdale wasn’t bad enough, on Friday night the Sky Blues extended their miserable streak of not defeating the Lancashire team to 21 league games, both home and away. City’s 3-0 loss at CBS Arena marked their 13th loss to the Lilywhites since 2007, with the other eight encounters ending in draws.

In a brief comment during his post-match press conference at Stoke last weekend, Mark Robins stated that the media will unavoidably focus on it in the lead-up to the most recent oddity in the two teams’ footballing histories. Other than the potential that every new North End steward reminds their squad of the killer stat and utilises it as a motivating factor, there is, of course, no rhyme or reason why such records should endure despite various players and managers attempting and failing year after year.

Ultimately, though, it still boils down to a match between two teams of players, with one emerging victorious. The only rational conclusion, then, is that it’s just a truly.
