Inspector Richard Cox described the behaviour of some fans as ‘totally unacceptable

Six people have been taken into custody by police as a result of the disturbance that occurred on Saturday, January 13, after Coventry City FC’s match against Leicester City. Allegedly, there were fights amongst fans outside the Coventry Building Society Arena in Longford.

Authorities reported “sporadic disorder” both before and after the Saturday, January 13th, 12.30 p.m. play. West Midlands Police reported that three individuals, ages 37, 35, and 27, had been taken into custody on suspicion of affray.

A 31-year-old man was detained on suspicion of hurling a missile close to the CBS Arena, while a 21-year-old guy was detained on suspicion of attacking a police officer. According to West Midlands Police, officers also detained a 34-year-old man on suspicion of committing a homophobic public order crime.

West Midlands Police are currently looking into banners that were also displayed prior to the game and contained extremely unpleasant language and pictures. Inspector Richard Cox of the Football Unit denounced and called certain fans’ actions “totally unacceptable.”

“Using a football match as an excuse for disorder is totally unacceptable and we will continue to take action to arrest those who come here looking to cause trouble,” West Midlands Police Football Unit Inspector Cox stated. We are still reviewing CCTV footage and looking into incidents both inside and outside the stadium in collaboration with our partners from Coventry City Football Club and British Transport Police.

“Offensive banners were taken down prior to the Coventry vs. Leicester game. In order to look into the matter, officers are collaborating with the Coventry City Football Club and our Warwickshire police counterparts.

“On Saturday (January 13), we saw shocking behaviour from a very small number of people,” Warwickshire Police Inspector Mark Calvert continued. “I’m sure most football fans will join me in condemning the behaviour.”
