Right players but wrong end of the table

The Sky Blues have had a difficult start to the new season, moving from play-off finalists to relegation fears, but what is the solution to their persistent problems?

Coventry City has experienced the particular suffering of coming dangerously close to winning the Premier League but falling short by the slimmest of margins.

Few predicted that the Sky Blues would make it to Wembley in May of last year to compete in the Championship play-off final, but they did, and they lost to Luton Town on penalties.

Losing after that incredible run to the playoffs was difficult enough. The fact that it showcased some of Mark Robins’ exceptional ability was an added drawback. The “double-whammy” of losing at Wembley was having to play in the second division without players like playmaker in chief Gustavo Hamer and goal hero Viktor Gyökeres.

Indeed, both players—Hamer from Sheffield United, located close up the M1 in South Yorkshire, and Gyökeres from Sporting in Portugal—brought in hefty salaries. Money, as they say, is not everything, and while Sky Blues’ long-term survival depends on it, this term’s success was never likely to be assured by it. Sadly, this has come to pass.

The Sky Blues are currently 20th with 16 points during the third international break of the season, a long cry from where they finished the previous season and where many analysts had predicted them to be this term.

Numerous players were added, including Brad Collins, Jay Dasilva, Milan van Ewijk, Bobby Thomas, Joel Latibeaudiere, Luis Binks (loan), Liam Kitching, Tatsuhiro Sakamoto, Yasin Ayari (loan), Ellis Simms, and Haji Wright. However, it has taken some time for them to settle in, and Robins is still missing a crucial piece to his team’s composition due to Hamer’s untimely departure.

Are the Sky Blues done for the season? Perhaps not; after all, keep in mind their dismal start to the season, which was made worse by pitching issues at the CBS Arena. But if manager Robins and City owner Doug King want to turn around their struggling squad, they will undoubtedly need to be nimble with their transfers throughout the window.

That’s our assessment of City’s problems thus far this season; what do you think? We would appreciate it if you could respond to a few questions we have formulated in order to gain insight into the supporters’ viewpoint about City’s problems.
