Ben Sheaf, a midfielder for Coventry City, has been linked to Luton Town; however, the Sky Blues will need to exert every effort to keep him at the CBS Arena.
Sheaf left Arsenal in the summer of 2021 after spending the previous season on loan, and he signed a permanent deal with the West Midlands team.
He spent much of his childhood years in the youth departments of West Ham United and Arsenal, making two professional appearances for the latter team before to making the move.
He has made such an impression during his time with the Championship team that the Premier League is now showing interest in him. If this were to happen, Coventry would suffer a significant loss at a crucial juncture in the season.
The twenty-five-year-old has been a staple in the starting lineup and a vital member of Coventry’s midfield since moving to the CBS Arena. He has started and participated in all but one of the championship games this season.
Because of his significance to the team, he has worn the captain’s armband for the last nine league games in which his team has participated. During that time, they have recorded five victories, three draws, and one defeat.
One of Sheaf’s main strengths is his ability to maintain defensive composure in the middle of the park. He has even occasionally moved into a back three to provide cover, but he is also willing to contribute offensively. Last time out, Coventry defeated Sheffield Wednesday 2-1, and Sheaf set the bar high by scoring twice.
Midway through the season, the loss of such a vital player in the middle of the pitch could easily destabilise Mark Robins’ team, especially as another major member of his midfield unit is also drawing interest from the Premier League.
The change may leave the Sky Blues lacking in central defence.
The 25-year-old is in a slightly different situation to his midfield teammate, with a contract that expires this summer meaning that a move at the end of the season is more likely, but losing two key figures within the same year could cause the harmony of the side some problems, especially if their promotion ambitions are realised, and they have to head to the Premier League with a completely new-look midfield.
Whilst it will be difficult to fend off Sheaf’s interest in a Premier League deal this month, the Sky Blues must do all they can to convince the midfielder to stay and attempt to reach that level with his current club, where he is a guaranteed starter, rather than have to re-establish himself in a new team, in a new league, midway through the season.
A player as dependable as Sheaf in that role, with the leadership qualities that come along with him, is not an easy thing to replace, so Coventry should stop at nothing to convince him to stay put.
