Wednesday boss gives his take on red cards and makes Coventry City’

Coventry City match reaction from CoventryLive as Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl gives his post match thoughts on the 2-0 defeat at the CBS Arena

Danny Rohl, manager of Sheffield Wednesday, has spoken out about the late double red card incident against Coventry City, admitting that his team was overcome by the hosts’ clinical edge in front of goal.

Tatsuhiro Sakamoto scored early in the first half and sealed the Sky Blues’ three-point victory with a late second in the Boxing Day encounter at the CBS Arena. However, on the final whistle, Wednesday’s Bambo Diaby collided with City’s Liam Kitching, resulting in referee Oliver Langford sending both players out with straight red cards for violent conduct.

After seeing the video evidence of the scuffle, an angry Mark Robins disputed Kitching’s innocence, and the club plans to appeal the verdict in the hope of the defender avoiding a three match ban, starting against Swansea on Friday.

With Diaby clearly the aggressor who sparked the confrontation, his manager accepted the decision, saying: “For me it was a little bit emotional. Maybe there was a discussion (between the players) but it was a fair play game overall and nothing bad. It’s a hard decision for both to get a red card after the game but it’s the decision from the ref and we can’t change it. This is football but it’s not helpful for us because we have Callum Paterson out for the next games as well and Bambo.”

Put to him that Robins accused his player of “assault” and asked if he has any complaints, he added: “I asked the ref about the situation and he said to me he was watching the situation and they didn’t stop the discussion but I didn’t really see it, but two red cards after the game is not good for both sides.”

As for the German’s take on the game, the laid back boss said: “I think there were two different halves. The first half Coventry was the better team. We were a bit open and invited them to play more risk because sometimes they play a high attack line and we waited for the transition but we were not clinical enough in that transition.

“We had better shape in the second half and more front foot defending, and we did really well and dominated the game.” We had terrific pressing moments and created a big, big chance to equalise, but it was virtually the first action of the opponent in our box in the second half, and they scored again.

“It’s a big topic for us in the last few weeks that you always speak about the two boxes are very important, and for the first Coventry goal we did not man mark in the box again. And then in the second half the player from Coventry did very well and did a good finish. These are the moments that are our issue.

“We have created chances in nearly every game since I arrived and we are a good team. But it’s not enough in this league to be a good team. You need to take something and be clinical in both boxes, and this is our biggest problem at the moment.

“Coventry had more calmness in the box and they finished clinically, and sometimes that’s hard for us because we played away from home and played a fantastic second half, dominated the game and so when you don’t get anything from the game it’s always hard.”
