Crawley Town manager’s defiant message to players and fans

Crawley Town manager Scott Lindsey sent a defiant message to his players and fans after their 2-2 draw at Sutton United put a dent in their play-off hopes.

Thanks to an outstanding performance by Liam Kelly, Scott Lindsey’s team led at the half. But Olly Sanderson’s goal was made possible by a Jay Williams error and a deflected Charlie Lakin attempt, giving the home team the lead. However, in extra time, Klaidi Lolos scored a crucial equaliser to secure what might prove to be a crucial point heading into the final weekend. View the complete game summary here.

Doncaster is closing in on the Reds, who are still in the final play-off berth, but only by a goal differential. Entering the last week of the season, Rovers are ahead due to a game in hand.

But if Doncaster lose against Colchester United on Tuesday, the odds swing back in Reds favour.

Despite his disappointment with the outcome and his own performance, Lindsey stated, “It’s not over and we have loads to play for.” We are very much in it right now. A lot can happen between now and next Saturday at 5 p.m. All we need to do is maintain our optimism and faith.

“It’s over, it’s gone now, there’s nothing you can do now, there’s no point in being upset,” I told the players in the changing room. Now there’s one last push.

“Don’t worry about what’s happening below us, look at what’s happening above, people are having a nervy finish now.”

With his team ahead 1-0 at the interval, Lindsey was not happy with his team’s performance in the second half. “We missed a lot of chances in the first half, especially in the first 20 minutes, when we could have been three or four up. We needed to take those chances and opportunities,” he stated.

“I believed we were okay in the first half, but we weren’t in the second.

They would have preferred it if we hadn’t played too directly, making it an end-to-end game that benefited them.

“We spoke about it in the meeting before the game about playing our way and taking the sting out of them and we didn’t do that.”

“We created so many chances in that first half you almost felt it wasn’t going to be our day. But we kept going and we scored a great goal. But I never thought we controlled the game or played our style at all in the second half. We were very edgy today.

“We knew it was going to be a scrap and a battle, and they wanted to make it that. We discussed that at the hotel this morning and all this week, they will be direct, there will be second balls to contend for and there has t be a point when we put our foot on the ball and get our control and I felt we never did that today.”

But after the game, Lindsey stated he had a good conversation with the players. “We have one big push left,” he stated, so I had to go into the changing area and be encouraging to the boys. Anything is possible. Nevertheless, we also need to look above in addition to below. Crewe lost points today, so there’s still a lot to be won.

“Look, we are still in the playoffs and we only have one game left.” Although this season has been wonderful, it will be disappointing if we are not selected.
