Brick, New Jersey — A South Amboy man is accused of hitting a lady, killing her, and then fleeing the scene on Route 35 in Brick over the weekend, according to Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer and Brick Township Police Chief David Forrester.
The young man is 19-year-old Mark D. Carey Jr. He was apprehended on Sunday at his house in South Amboy.
The deadly car accident happened at 9 a.m. on Saturday, January 13, on Rt. 35 south near Bay Boulevard in Brick Township. The woman was hit while wandering along the highway’s shoulder. The woman’s name has yet to be released by authorities.
Brick Police were called to Rt. 35 at 9:15 a.m. Saturday for a report of a crash, and they discovered the woman had been hit while on the shoulder of the road. It is unclear who contacted 911.
She was brought to Ocean University Medical Centre in Brick and pronounced dead.
Police stated the vehicle fled the scene. The investigation revealed that it was a 1999 Ford Explorer registered to Carey.
Carey, Jr. was charged with deliberately leaving the scene of a car collision that resulted in the death of another. He was also charged with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident that resulted in significant bodily harm or death, failing to report an accident, reckless driving, careless driving, and failure to maintain lane of travel, according to authorities.
As of Tuesday, he was being held at the Ocean County Jail in Toms River awaiting a detention hearing.
