The loanee from Frosinone defeated Cagliari 3-1 on Sunday to bring his season total to nine goals. And, Matias Soule will find it difficult to top the result that gave his team three potentially crucial points in the Serie A relegation fight, regardless of how many more goals he scores between now and the end of May.
With his reliable left boot, Soule stepped up and sent a magnificent free-kick over the ball and into the top corner of the Cagliari net.
Claudio Ranieri, the visiting coach, compared the striker—who was reportedly being pursued by both Newcastle United and Crystal Palace—to one of the greatest football players of all time. And without a doubt the greatest to set foot on Italian land.
Matias Soule draws analogies to Diego Maradona
“You just have to applaud him when you have champions like Soule who shoots like Maradona or (Brazilian icon) Zico,” ex-coach of Fulham, Chelsea, and Leicester Ranieri sighs, according to statements obtained by Tuttomercatoweb.
“For those who have paid for tickets to enter the stadium, this is (a moment of) beauty.”
Associated with Crystal Palace and Newcastle
The 20-year-old Soule has been a revelation for the Frosinone fans this season since signing on loan from title-challenging Juventus. The supporters have been pampered.
Before the year began, Corriere dello Sport reports that Newcastle and Palace had discussions with Juventus director Cristiano Giuntoli. Roy Hodgson’s struggling, frequently inept team was apparently prepared to pay a club record £30 million for the team.
Fans of Frosinone should rest easy for the time being, though, as Soule will almost definitely play out his remaining short-term deal before his long-term future is decided.
Soule himself said to DAZN, “I think so, I will stay until the end of the season.”
“Soule is a player who is still very much in the public eye. However, Juve has informed us—at least up till now—that they are really pleased with the direction he is going,” Frosinone CEO Guido Angelozzi continues, speaking to Tuttomercatoweb.
“Therefore, I have no doubt that Soule will remain until June.”
