At the age of 17, a young player who was sold by Derby County in 2021 has just made his debut internationally.
The talent that Derby County’s academy produces is amazing. Over the years, the Rams have witnessed a number of young players blossom into first-team stars.
Derby’s academy ranks them among the best in the Premier League thanks to their category-one setup.
A number of young people have thrived at their development centre; Will Hughes, Jason Knight, Max Bird, Eiran Cashin, Liam Thompson, and Louie Sibley are just a few instances of academy graduates who have made it to the first team.
The Rams have demonstrated their ability to develop elite talent, and rival teams frequently sign some of its players when they are still young.
Derby was obliged to sell attacking midfielder Omari Kellyman to Aston Villa in 2022 and left-back Archie Brown during their darkest period of administration in 2021.
Sadly, James Scanlon left Pride Park to sign with Manchester United, so those two young players weren’t the only gifted players to leave.
Scanlon, who is already a fixture for the Red Devils’ youth teams, has just accomplished something that most football players can only imagine.
This week was Scanlon’s first call-up to the Gibraltar team. The former Derby star, who was only 17, came off the bench in a play-off match against Lithuania to avoid relegation.
Given that the minnows were destroyed 14-0 by France in Euro 2024 qualifying, it was a competitive game even though his team lost 1-0 and was demoted to Nations League D.
The Man United wonderkid entered the game in the 74th minute with his team down 1-0.
The teenager, who can also play for England, may be making his first of many outings. However, because he had played for Gibraltar at the under-17 and under-21 levels, they chose to promote him quickly to the senior squad.
Scanlon, who has made nine appearances for the under-18 team and scored four goals, is also thriving for his club. In four games for the under-21 team, he has also contributed one assist, serving as a timely reminder of the quality Derby had stolen from them.

Before going on loan to Gateshead in January, Brown established himself as a prolific scorer for the under-21s, amassing six goals in nine Premier League 2 outings.
The fact that the 18-year-old has only made two starts but has still scored three goals demonstrates his clinical ability.
Though Scanlon left three years ago, Allen and Brown are setting the stage for the talent of the future.
