This season, Derby County needs to move up to the Championship or else they run the risk of losing one of their best players.
Derby County’s campaign is about to enter its most critical phase. Paul Warne’s team is currently in second place with six games remaining, four points ahead of Bolton Wanderers but five behind leaders Portsmouth.
The Rams are in a strong position to win promotion despite their Saturday loss to Northampton Town, but if they don’t, they may lose a few of their most important players.
Max Bird, a 23-year-old who left Derby’s academy to join Bristol City in January, will finish the season at Pride Park.
Eiran Cashin, a fellow academy graduate, might leave in the summer, particularly if they play in League One for the second consecutive year.
Eiran Cashin has been outstanding for Derby County
Since leaving the Derby Academy, Cashin has improved to become a superb ball-playing defender.
The 22-year-old almost signed a contract to play for Premier League team Brighton last summer thanks to his performances for the Rams, but he ended up staying in Derbyshire because the paperwork was not completed in time.
It was a blessing to have such a gifted defender on staff this season because he has been crucial to their push for promotion. With the exception of two league games, Cashin has appeared in every game and developed a strong rapport with Curtis Nelson.
The defender, who was once described as “outstanding” by former manager Wayne Rooney, drew more interest in January but Warne stayed steadfast in his resolve to stay, and in February he was rewarded for his devotion with a new, lucrative three-year contract.
They’ve made sure they’ll get paid fairly for their star player by locking him down to a long-term contract, but they haven’t given themselves any assurance that he will stay past the summer.
If Derby County stay in League One, Cashin could depart
Look, there’s a chance that Brighton or another Premier League team will bid for Cashin if Derby wins promotion to the Championship.
On the other hand, should the Rams miss out on promotion, his chances of leaving the team rise.
Cashin is far too good to play in the third tier for another season. He has kept 15 clean sheets with Nelson and recovered 5.8 balls per game.
His commanding displays combined with his exceptional passing ability (averaging an 82% pass completion rate) make him the perfect defender for elite teams.
Cashin has demonstrated that he is at ease passing the ball into midfield and advancing the play, which is something Brighton likes to do.
So it makes sense that they attempted to sign him in the summer, and they have no reason to stop themselves from trying to test Derby’s commitment once more.
