Derby County want to sign Charlton Athletic’s former Everton star Thierry Small this summer, but sources tell Football Insider that a new three-year contract is already being discussed at The Valley.
Small, 19, is a transfer target for the Rams, who are trying to improve ahead of their return to the Championship.
Sources revealed that the Addicks will exercise their option to extend Small’s current contract while he considers his options.
The left-back joined Charlton from Southampton for free in January and has made 14 League One appearances this season.
It looks that Small will have to make a decision, but with no official bid yet, Charlton’s offer is currently the only one on the table.
Opting to activate his extension boosts the club’s negotiation position and allows them to profit more from any deal.
Just six months after joining the club for free, Charlton could make some immediate profit on the 19-year-old should he opt to leave The Valley.
However, he remains an important part of their ambitious plans for the future under owner Charlie Methven.
The offer of a three-year deal at The Valley may prove tempting for the defender to settle and develop without the constant moving he has experienced in recent years.
Small was previously considered hot property, with Football Insider claiming interest from Tottenham last summer, while Rangers were also offered the option to make a move.
A move to the Championship could help him improve his stock in a higher level as he seeks a return to a Premier League club.
In other developments, Newcastle are negotiating terms to add two new defenders.
