Derby County’s League One promotion winning side is ageing and they should target one of Wolves’ attacking prodigies in Nathan Fraser.
However, with two elderly attackers, James Collins and Conor Washington, the Rams may have two players who do not score enough goals in the Championship. Furthermore, Tom Barkhuizen and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing are both nearing the end of their careers, and the Derby attack will require a more young approach if they are to thrive.
So, where better to look than Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Nathan Fraser, who has impressed in an injury-plagued squad? Wolves will most certainly try to sign him on loan next season, and Warne’s side might be suitable suitors.
At only 19 years old, he represents a player who has showed a lot of potential in his short career and can expand on it next season.
Fraser, who had 26 goals in 63 youth team games, was given the opportunity to play for the first team following the injuries of Hwang Hee-Chan and Matheus Cunha.
Fraser has two goals and one assist in 11 games with the first squad, averaging 116 minutes per contribution. His excellent performances have won him plaudits from manager Gary O’Neil, who is pleased with his efforts.
“I adored what I saw from him last week: he gave everything he had until he literally had nothing left and couldn’t move his legs, so we had to take him off.
“I love that about him, that he’s unbelievably willing to do whatever it takes.”
Fraser, who was set to go on loan to Shrewsbury Town in January before Wolves’ injury crisis, requires more game time to develop and reach his full potential.
Derby County’s elevation to the Championship was largely due to their experience. The aforementioned trio totaled 58 goals and assists, allowing Derby to grab some critical points at times.
While these four have all competed in the Championship, Nathan Fraser, a young newcomer, can help their attack. At 6ft 2, he can combine superb finishing with hold-up play, which has been a hallmark of any Warne squad.
Fraser, like Collins and Washington, may gain vital knowledge from the pair and utilise it throughout the season in the hopes of establishing himself as a Championship attacker.
With journalist Leigh Curtis stating that attack is a priority for Derby County next season, Fraser might be among a long list of attackers.
Some will argue that the young striker has not done enough as yet to earn such a high-profile move. But, with his Premier League minutes and appraisal from a well-respected coach in O’Neil, Fraser could be the perfect addition to an ageing Rams squad.
