Heart Broken ;Derby County injury striker ‘on crutches’

The latest injury news from the opposition camp ahead of Bristol Rovers’ trip to Derby County this weekend

Conor Washington, a striker for Northern Ireland, returned from his international duties on crutches, thus Derby County will be without him when they visit Bristol Rovers on Saturday afternoon, according to Rams manager Paul Warne.

After opening his account for the third-tier powerhouse at Burton Albion in August, the summer transfer from Rotherham United has scored twice and assisted once in his last three League One games. He had been goalless for two months prior to this.

However, an ankle injury sustained while away with Northern Ireland has put the 31-year-old on crutches although an X-Ray showed no signs of a break and results from further examinations are currently being awaited. Elsewhere for the Rams there were no other injuries picked up by internationals with Ryan Nambe (Namibia) and Darren Robinson (Northern Ireland under-21s) expected to return to training ahead of the Gas test.

Prior to this weekend’s Pride Park match, Warne made the following revelation to the media on Thursday: “Conor hasn’t reported back okay.” He’s finished with his ankle. It has been X-rayed, and nothing is broken. To check for ligament damage, he is currently undergoing a scan. He uses crutches. Tyrese Fornah has returned, along with Ryan Nyambe and Darren Robinson, with the exception of Wash. However, I have not yet observed them on the grass; I will ascertain their level of training.”

Alongside Washington, Tyreese John-Jules and Liam Thompson are also expected to be on the sidelines, although the former has trained with the Rams this week. “Tyreece John-Jules has trained with the group this week,” Warne added. “It’s still a very slow process with him. He is training today and we will see how he is after that. We will be cautious, but that’s quite good

“Thommo will be playing on the grass, but his recovery has been more slower since he keeps having fluid in his quad. Regretfully, he really ought to have returned by now. He is still likely three weeks away from actually working with the squad, even if he begins on the turf today and no other problems arise.

“Since it’s been going on for a few weeks, that’s disheartening. He is exerting every physical effort to avoid not training his quad. Perhaps before Christmas, we will see him.”

Full-back Callum Elder, who has his own ankle problem, will need to demonstrate his fitness prior to the Rovers game, according Derbyshire Live. Winger Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, who had a knock to his knee against Barnsley the previous weekend, was not put in danger during Derby’s 3-1 FA Cup replay loss to Crewe Alexandra, but he should be able to play again. Jake Rooney, a centre back, suffered an anterior cruciate ligament rupture against Bolton Wanderers earlier in the season, which has sidelined him permanently.
