Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell gave optimistic updates on David Montgomery, Frank Ragnow, and Jonah Jackson.
The Detroit Lions have begun their preparations for their road game against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, having officially ended their bye week. The opportunity to recuperate is one of the main advantages of a bye week, and it seems the Lions took use of it. Coach Dan Campbell said on Monday that he was hopeful about the prospects of left guard Jonah Jackson, running back David Montgomery, and center Frank Ragnow playing since they all shown improvement over the previous week.
Campbell said, “All three of those guys moved around today.” They were in the open. Priming the pump and getting them ready for tomorrow was really the focus of today. However, they were all participating in the solo, group, and special teams segments that we conducted. Each of the three men.
When queried about his belief that they will be accessible this week, Campbell expressed great optimism.
Yes, I believe that. They’ve been heading in the correct direction for a while, but we’ll see tomorrow when we pad them up. I’m definitely hoping to acquire them,” Campbell remarked.
Since sustaining a rib injury in Week 6 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Montgomery has been out of action. Over the last two games, first-round rookie Jahmyr Gibbs has filled in nicely, running for 220 yards and two scores on 37 runs.
Campbell does not anticipate Gibbs to be the workhorse back, though, with Montgomery likely to return to the starting lineup. Instead, he may play a larger role than he did when both backs were healthy earlier in the season.
“We are aware of David’s abilities, no doubt, but Gibbs has improved each week as well,” Campbell remarked. “Those men will be asked to perform tasks they excel at, which will aid our offence in moving the ball. As I sit here and speak with you, I don’t necessarily see Gibbs getting 65 plays. He will now receive his fair portion, though I don’t see it happening. He is maturing and we know what he can become. Therefore, I believe it will be decided somewhat by committee, and we will make sure those folks are included. Gibbs will receive his cues.
Jackson has missed three consecutive games due to an ankle ailment, whereas Ragnow has only missed one due to a calf issue. It will be intriguing to watch what the Lions do at right guard now that both are back in the starting lineup. Graham Glasgow has fared admirably filling in at every interior offensive line position thus far this season. Nevertheless, Halapoulivaati Vaitai was the starter when the season began. This season, Vaitai has only started three games due to injuries to his knee and back. Will he be fit enough to return to the starting lineup after the additional rest?
The only three players on the 53-man roster who were injured and missed last Monday’s game were Jackson, Montgomery, and Ragnow. Therefore, it’s probable that the Lions will be OK after the bye. When the first injury report of the week is out on Wednesday afternoon, we’ll know more for sure.
