Mr. Reliable Owen Bailey of Doncaster Rovers demonstrated his dedication to the cause by continuing to play against Accrington Stanley in spite of possibly having a shattered eye socket.
Summertime acquisition This season, Bailey has played more minutes than any other player for Doncaster, excelling in both midfield and defence.
The Rovers supporters and manager Grant McCann, who told The Free Press, “He is a machine,” are both quite impressed with the former Newcastle United young player.
“He simply moves on, class. Despite seeming to have a shattered eye socket, he continues to crack.”
After a collision at the conclusion of the first half, Bailey’s right eye had a swelled lump visible below it throughout the second half at Wham Stadium.
But he was on the field for the whole 120 minutes of the game, which Doncaster won 2-1 to advance to the next round.
At Rovers over the summer, Bailey was one of twelve new hires.
Arriving from Gateshead, he was described as a defensive midfielder and started the season positioned at the base of Doncaster’s midfield.
However, due to a series of injuries, Bailey has been utilised in defence recently, a position he has adapted to with ease.
The 24-year-old disclosed to The Free Press that before to advancing into Newcastle’s midfield, he was a defender.
“I played a lot of games at center-back, that was my main position during my time at Newcastle,” he stated.
“I played there for two, three, and four whole seasons. I am accustomed to it. I haven’t played there as frequently as I used to.
“I moved into midfield towards the end of my time at Newcastle.”
Bailey was reportedly on Doncaster’s radar as early as the summer of 2022, a full year after the team declined to extend a contract offer to him during a trial.
We recruited him here because of his versatility—he can play a variety of positions—according to McCann.
“He performs admirably in every position that he plays. The variety he offers us greatly pleases me.
