Joe Ironside is expected to score 20 league goals before the season ends, according to Grant McCann.
The 30-year-old Doncaster Rovers striker currently has 14 goals (18 in all competitions), and he has 11 games remaining to attempt to reach the elusive milestone, which hasn’t been attained by a Rovers player in five seasons.
In just one season, Ironside has already matched his all-time high for EFL goals. At Cambridge United, he scored 14 in consecutive seasons. He will now be striving to emulate the legendary John Marquis, who was once the striking royalty of the Rovers, as well as to surpass his own personal record. He scored more than 20 league goals for the team twice. The final one occurred in the 2018–19 season, during which he scored 21 in the regular season to help Rovers get to the League One play-offs in Grant McCann’s debut season.
“This season, I believe Joe has been exceptional,” McCann stated to the Free Press. “He’s been a very good addition due to his abilities both on and off the pitch, including his demeanour off the pitch, training methods, and training routine.
“I believe Joe will admit to you that he believes he should have scored 20 goals by now.
“He consistently places himself in appropriate places. Can he score six more goals in the next eleven games? I wouldn’t rule anything out for him since we know that, given the right circumstances and conditions, he will almost always score or force the ‘keeper to work.
“I’m hoping he succeeds. Getting reaching that milestone would be fantastic for Joe personally as well.”
The next opportunity to increase his tally is later today, at 3pm, when Crewe Alexandra visits DN4.
