Doncaster Rovers lead race in pursuit of Crystal Palace man

Doncaster Rovers are interested in luring the stopper to Yorkshire on loan as they prepare for another year in League Two. They lost in the play-offs in this past season at the semi-final stage to Crewe Alexandra.

Whitworth, 20, appears to be a man in-demand in the Football League at the moment and has been with Crystal Palace since joining them back in 2016. He is an England youth international and has played for the Three Lions at various different levels in the past.

In this latest update regarding his situation by journalist Nixon on Patreon, Doncaster Rovers are keen on landing him ahead of the next campaign. However, Grant McCann’s side will need to see off competition from League One pair Exeter City and Shrewsbury Town for his signature.

Whitworth could be viewed as a contender by Doncaster Rovers for their top spot.

In the upcoming season, they intend to pursue promotion once more, and they will need to find a goalkeeper to replace Timothee Lo-Tutala, who returned to Hull City when his loan agreement expired.

Whitworth started his career at AFC Wimbledon before switching to Crystal Palace and he has since progressed up through the academy ranks of the Premier League outfit.

The fact that the Sutton native signed a contract extension in January of last year indicates how highly the Eagles regard him.

But because of the choices available to them in his position, his route to their starting XI in the top division is currently barred. Therefore, he would probably benefit from a brief departure from Oliver Glasner’s side.

Getting consistent playing time in the third tier would be more advantageous for him than returning to development football.

Whitworth made his Crystal Palace debut in a league clash against rivals Brighton and Hove Albion in March 2023 and became their youngest ever ‘keeper in the Premier League in the process. He has since played once more for the London club.

Will Doncaster Rovers get him?

Time will tell whether Doncaster Rovers can land him as there are other teams in the frame like Exeter City and Shrewsbury Town in the division above them.

However, his chances of regular minutes would be greater with McCann’s men and they head into next term in confident mood after their impressive run of form that saw them catapult themselves into the top seven.
