“Think of the children,” say upset residents after spate of gun violence on Doncaster estate

Upset residents of a Doncaster estate blighted by three gun related incidents in the space of five days have called for an end to the violence, describing it as “chaos” for the community and have urged the perpetrators to “think of the children.”

Armed police descended on the Clay Lane estate last night following incidents on Monday and Wednesday when shots were fired outside two houses on the estate.

The first incident took place in broad daylight in Chalmers Drive, followed by two incidents in nearby Wilberforce Road, with police descending on the area in huge numbers on all three occasion.

Fed up residents have called for an end to the violence and a campaign group set up to help improve the estate between Wheatley and Edenthorpe has told those involved to put down their weapons.

A Friends of Clay Lane representative posted an impassioned statement on social media, stating: “Unfortunately, the recent incidents aren’t helping us achieve our goals of improving the estate, uniting the community, and improving Clay Lane’s image.

“We aren’t the police, we have no power to arrest or have words with anyone committing crimes or anti social behaviour, what we do is try to show that Clay Lane is a good place, with a good heart.

“We formed a year ago almost to the day, after coming together to paint the play park on Shackleton Road.

Since then, the estate has been featured in more than a dozen positive newspaper articles, residents from all over Doncaster have expressed their admiration for what we are doing, and the council, police, and numerous other organizations have all expressed their gratitude.

However, for every advancement we make in our estate, criminal activity and antisocial behavior cause us to regress two steps.Since there are more kids on this estate than adults, we have a special responsibility to serve as role models for them. We must promote moral behavior, a strong sense of community, and a decrease in these occurrences.

“Please, please, consider the children, the chaos this brings to our neighborhood, and the long-term effects this will have on our magnificent estate.”

In an incident that occurred last night on Wilberforce Road, armed cops are said to have raided a house.

Five guys broke into a property on the street on Wednesday night and caused criminal damage. According to police, gunfire was reportedly perhaps fired at a vehicle that same evening.

South Yorkshire Police said they thought a firearm had been discharged from one vehicle in the incident, damaging another.

According to a representative for the South Yorkshire Police force, two vehicles were found at the scene: a white Audi and what seemed to be a black Volkswagen.

According to Det Sgt Joe Hackworthy, “We will not allow criminals to use firearms to terrorize our community.”

“It is imperative those responsible for the recent firearms incidents in Doncaster are located and brought to justice before someone is seriously hurt.”

Following gunfire at a property on Chalmers Drive, which leads to Wilberforce Road, police declared on Monday that they were looking for four men.

On Monday afternoon, authorities were contacted, and they stayed on the scene until evening.

Following a gunshot in Doncaster, we are requesting information, according to a spokesman for South Yorkshire Police.

Four males are said to have been spotted in a car on Chalmers Drive, which they all got out of.

“One individual hurled a glass bottle towards the property, another carried an unidentified weapon, and a third fired a shotgun. Thankfully, there were no reported injuries.

“We think that this was a deliberate assault.

“A scene was set up while officers worked, however it has already been taken down, and officers are currently conducting several inquiries.

It is the latest in a string of serious incidents on the small residential estate.

In June 2021, police probed a shooting and three car smash where drivers confronted each other with weapons in Chalmers Drive – with shots later fired in the area, just hours apart.

In February 2022, a man was arrested and later jailed for firing a gun at a man’s face in Chalmers Drive.

Daniel Nica, 45, was arrested after firing pellets from an airgun following a dispute, causing multiple injuries to his victim’s lip, chest and back which required hospital treatment and was later sentenced to three years in prison.
