Duke Basketball: Insider Rules Out One Suitor in VJ Edgecombe Race

Duke basketball seems to have only a few to beat for VJ Edgecombe’s electrifying services.

VJ Edgecombe, a basketball prospect for Duke, stated last week that he is “leaning one way” and has focused on just five schools—Duke, Kentucky, Florida, Baylor, and St. John’s. The guard from Long Island Lutheran (N.Y.) is the class’s top-ranked undecided prospect, coming in at No. 5 overall on the 247Sports 2024 Composite.

In response to a question regarding the well-known contest on Thursday night from a prospective Red Storm player, national recruiting insider “Trilly Donovan” dashed the fan’s expectations in eight words: “VJ will not end up at St. John’s.”

According to the 247Sports 2024 Composite, Jon Scheyer, the head coach of Duke basketball, and his team are currently the favourites. But as a number of recruiting analysts have recently pointed out, Kentucky may be that “one way” Edgecombe is “leaning.”

It’s improbable that he will make his choice public before 2024 arrives. That being said, it wouldn’t be shocking if an announcement were made shortly after.

In the meantime, the six-foot-five, 180-pound five-star prospect, who has been under consideration for a Blue Devils offer since July, keeps showcasing the exciting tools that contribute to the reason why his recruitment is drawing so much interest.

In their Saturday night City of Palms Classic championship game against the nation’s top-ranked prep powerhouse, Montverde Academy (Fla.), and 2024 Duke signee Cooper Flagg, a five-star forward and the cycle’s top talent, VJ Edgecombe and his Long Island Lutheran team were defeated.

However, Edgecombe’s “lateral twitch” and “vertical pop” were hard to miss, as On3’s Jamie Shaw pointed out above the posted highlight of him blowing past defenders and exploding to the rim for an emphatic flush:

In his team’s 73-59 defeat, Edgecombe recorded a team-high 20 points and seven rebounds. In addition to his three assists, one steal, and four blocks, Flagg finished with a game-high 21 points and 14 rebounds to further cement his MVP status.
