Duke Product Makes Strong Case for More Minutes

Former Duke basketball guard Gary Trent Jr. recorded his first career double-double, and he did so off the bench

The Toronto Raptors (11–15) no longer use Gary Trent Jr. as a full-time starting player. However, the Duke basketball player demonstrated his abilities on Monday night when playing with the starting lineup.

Trent finished in the game with 22 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists, and only one turnover in 35 minutes as a substitute for the Charlotte Hornets (7-18), who were missing their only NBA Blue Devil, Mark Williams (lower back contusion), for the fifth straight game. Charlotte was defeated 114-99 at home. From the field, he went 9 for 17, and from beyond the arc, 4 for 10.

Trent was on the court for at least 34 minutes for the first time since the second game of the season. It was also just his fourth game of 30 minutes or more for the 2023–24 Raptors.

And his efficiently versatile performance marked the first double-double of his pro career.

Gary Trent Jr., who was selected in the first round of the 2018 NBA Draft as a second-round pick after playing just one game for the Blue Devils, is averaging 10.8 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 1.5 assists in 25.1 minutes per game through 23 games this season. His field goal percentage is just 39.1%, and his three-point percentage is only 36.0%.

The defending champion Denver Nuggets (18-10) will visit Trent and the Raptors on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. ET.
