Prime Duke Basketball Target Now ‘Leaning One Way’ in Recruitment

Perhaps the Duke basketball recruiters will soon get their answer from elite playmaker VJ Edgecombe.

Senior VJ Edgecombe of Long Island Lutheran (N.Y.) announced recently that he will select the winner of his recruitment “in the next couple of months or so.” There’s now good reason to believe that the five-star Duke basketball target will make his announced decision within that timeframe, if not sooner.

Tuesday night at the City of Palms Classic in Florida, after Edgecombe’s game-winning 20 points in his team’s 83-59 victory over Westminster Academy (Fla.),

The 6-foot-5, 180-pound prolific guard from Fort Myers, Florida, revealed an intriguing admission to the media.

He stated, “I am leaning one way,” as reported by Travis Branham of 247Sports.

It’s unclear at this time which way he leans. But given that he has previously stated on multiple occasions that he will make his announcement whenever it feels appropriate, his comment appears to indicate that he is close to making up his mind and announcing his decision to the recruiting community.

Late in July, VJ Edgecombe—who is currently the class’s top-ranked undecided prospect at No. 5 overall on the 247Sports 2024 Composite—identified the final 10 candidates, which included pro-route option G League Ignite and Duke, Alabama, Baylor, Florida, Florida State, Miami, Michigan, St. John’s, and UConn. Later, after receiving an offer from the Wildcats, he added Kentucky.

In that sequence, he has since travelled to Florida, Michigan, Duke, Kentucky, and St. John’s.

The first 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions for Edgecombe’s recruitment appeared about two weeks after he got back to his house from his basketball visit to Duke, where he went to Countdown to Craziness with all five of the 2024 recruits who have since signed with the Blue Devils.

As things stand, Jon Scheyer, the head coach of Duke in his second year, and his elite recruiting class are still expected to win all three of those entered picks and add to their already excellent collection.
