Defiant Hibs manager David Grey says Easter Road supporters shouldn’t be anxious about Sunday’s retaliation match against Dundee United. The rookie head coach also says he still has complete faith in a strategy that will work.
After a disastrous injury-time collapse against United at Tannadice just two weeks ago, where the hosts overcame a 2-1 deficit to win 3-2 at home amid wild celebrations, Hibs will be aiming to make amends. In the two games since that loss, Gray’s squad has drawn both away at Ross County and at home to Hearts. He is adamant that supporters should be in a positive frame of mind for this rematch.
When asked if there were any anxieties among the supporters, the former captain responded, “I don’t know why they’d be feeling nervous.” “I would think they’d be coming into the game with optimism, needing to be right behind us exactly as they were in the last game, in the derby,” he continued.
“The atmosphere was fantastic. They were right behind the side from the start, and I expect it to be the same. It’s an opportunity for us at home to go and try and get three points and it’s an opportunity for players that should be looking forward to.
“I do think we’re just one win away. We can draw confidence and faith from that single game because we are aware of how swiftly the story can shift.
Grey responded, “I think I’ve coped with it by just sticking to what I believe in,” when asked how he had handled the pressure of seeing his squad falter from the technical area. That and working harder all areas, as well as sticking together as a group on the training pitch.
“Reflecting on the games, going over them individually and collectively and simply taking every chance, whatever day it is, to try to make the guys better. That’s our duty at the end of the day; to try to make every player better and when the squad gets better then that’s the ultimate aim.
“All of that is fantastic, but we are always evaluated solely on the basis of our performance, and that is what we currently know. I have spoken extensively about the areas and how we have occasionally improved. We know we need to get points on the board. That is the be-all and end-all, and that’s the complete focus this weekend.”
