Danny Searle has made pacy defender Giles Phillips his latest addition to the Fleet squad as the 27-year-old arrives with League One and National League experience.
Born in Milwaukee in the USA, Phillips played college football there before joining QPR from FC Barrington in 2017. A regular in the QPR U23 side where he was a few years ahead of the Fleet’s Franklin Domi, the centre-back’s debut in English football came in a loan period with Wycombe Wanderers. He made 11 League One appearances in the Chairboys’ promotion season in 2019/20 before joining them on a permanent basis in 2020.
He first worked with Danny Searle while on loan at Aldershot Town. He made an impact for the Shots in the National League and was given a permanent contract there in 2021. Over the next two years, Phillips played at the EBB Stadium. He spent a season there as Tyler Cordner’s partner and appeared more than 70 times overall, tallying four goals.
In January 2023, Phillips and the current Fleet boss got back together at Waterford. Phillips was a member of the Blues team that won promotion to the League of Ireland Premier Division in November of last year. He returned to England after the end of the Irish campaign, where he played the remaining three months of the previous campaign with Oxford City.
The new hire stated to Fleet TV that “knowing Danny definitely makes the transition easier.” I am fully aware of what he needs from me. Additionally, I spent a season playing with Tyler, so I’m looking forward to strengthening our relationship. I can defend well and bring some pace at the same time. I’m an aggressive defender.
