England Giant Has Tender retirement at end of World Cup

After the Rugby World Cup, vice captain Courtney Lawes will step down from his position with the England team.

The 34-year-old is one of just five Englishmen to have 100 caps. He has participated in four World Cups and two tours with the British and Irish Lions.

His attempt to end his time with coach Steve Borthwick’s team on a high note was dashed in the semi-final on Saturday against South Africa.

“I believe the moment is right. I’m satisfied with my four World Cup appearances,” he remarked.

“I still haven’t told Steve! However, I will inform him.

“It marks the end of an era for me, but I am truly honored to have represented England for such a long time.” Time flies.

“I take pride in the path I’ve traveled. I will always cherish being able to conclude with this bunch.”

Lawes, who has played for his country 105 times in fifteen years, might play his farewell game against Argentina on Friday in the bronze medal game.

2009 saw him make his England debut against Australia while Borthwick was captain of the squad.

In addition to playing in the 2011 and 2015 competitions and representing the Lions in 2017 and 2021, the flanker was a beaten finalist against the Springboks in 2019.

Though he will still play for Northampton at the club level, he is motivated to make a lasting impression on the international scene by helping the side finish third. He thinks that England have a bright future.

“We showed to everyone what it means to play for this team,” he stated. “Play for the boys who are with you and for your country.

“I believe that now everyone is aware of his skill as a coach and the potential this club has.

“We wish to end successfully. It’s critical that we complete well and send everyone home with a victory.”
