The finishing of Everton’s strikers hasn’t exactly taken the world by storm thus far this season. After eight league games, Dominic Calvert-Lewin has scored two goals, while new attackers Chermiti and Beto have yet to score in the Premier League.
Due to this, the Toffees struggled under Sean Dyche in their early seasons. Recently, at Goodison Park, the visiting Hatters gained confidence and defeated Everton 2-1 despite Everton having 23 shots on goal in the ninety minutes.
Though the Toffees’ current predicament is not exclusive to poor strikers, the Merseysiders signed a specific bust up front in the 2017–18 campaign that left fans feeling very let down.
Cenk Tosun was signed by Everton when?
Under Sam Allardyce’s leadership, Cenk Tosun joined the Toffees in January 2018 for an alleged £27 million transfer price, according to Sky Sports.
It appeared at the time that Everton had acquired a clinical attacker who was prepared for the rigours of Premier League English football; he scored 20 goals from 33 games in his final full season for the Black Eagles, a devastating goal return for Beskitas in Turkey.
Not long after moving to England in March, the Turkish striker would score his first goal for his new team, the Toffees, away at Burnley in a narrow 2-1 loss.
The seasoned shooter would then go on a short purple patch for the Blues, netting three goals in his next two club appearances against Stoke City and Brighton. A double against the Potters would guarantee Allardyce’s team would win the close match, 2-1.
Regretfully, Tosun’s objectives would cease to exist thereafter.
He would only score five more goals for Everton in the Premier League before being sent back to his home country of Turkey. Journalist Aaron Sharp of the Guardian called him “awful” and urged Yerry Mina, a central defender, to start up front rather than the six-foot-nine dude.
Fortunately for the latter, since leaving Merseyside, he has been able to turn around his career.
Now, where is Cenk Tosun?
After a terrible two seasons at Goodison Park, Tosun decided to return to Turkey. Despite a brief loan stint with Crystal Palace away from the Toffees, he was unable to resume his Premier League career, managing just one goal in his memorably brief stay.
With his old team Beskitas, he would get back to his best and resume his career as a clinical finisher in the Süper Lig.
After spending different periods of time with the Turkish club, he has now scored 86 goals in 190 games, surpassing the goals scored by players who have replaced Tosun in the Blues attack, such as Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Neal Maupay.
It’s possible that Tosun flourishes in a comfortable environment; he scored 15 goals for the Istanbul team last season, helping them to a good third-place finish in the league.
In contrast, Dwight McNeil scored the fewest goals for Everton in the 2022–23 Premier League season, while the team’s star player, Calvert-Lewin, scored just two goals in the entire season.
Last season, Dyche and company probably could have benefited from having a player with Tosun’s level of production, but the 32-year-old will be happy with his ability to get over his terrible time with the Toffees and return to becoming a star for Besiktas.
