Rangers eye “complete”Everton 27-year-old Carlo Ancelotti tipped to “stop’

The 27-year-old centre-back is currently on loan at Southampton, with a report in the Sun claiming that Rangers are one of several clubs monitoring his situation.

Everton are reportedly set to recall Mason Holgate from his loan spell at St Mary’s in January, despite the fact that the centre-back has only made five appearances for Southampton this season.

While Mason Holgate’s season has been a disappointment, the Everton defender was once expected to be the best in the league.

Former England U21 international Holgate, who joined the Toffees for £2 million from Barnsley in 2015, was once one of the most highly-rated talents south of the line.

Holgate signed for Everton under Roberto Martinez and went on to work under Ronald Koeman, Sam Allardyce, and Ronald Koeman at the club after being on trial at Manchester United.

Rangers are reportedly interested in the scenario, with English Championship clubs Middlesbrough and Watford also interested in the centre-back.

Speaking on Everton’s official website after signing a contract deal until 2024, the now-Real Madrid boss touted the defender for greatness.

“I did not know Mason before I came here and I was surprised by him,” Ancelotti stated. “He showed a lot of defensive quality during this period; he is very focused in his defensive work.”

“He has the ability to be a top defender.” He is quick, physically strong, and intelligent.

predicted to have a “fantastic career” by Carlo Ancelotti.

Carlo Ancelotti was named as Everton’s manager in 2019, but it was in 2020 that the great Italian manager heaped admiration on Mason Holgate.

“He is an all-around defender.” He is quite young and eager to learn. He has made no big errors in the games [under Ancelotti].

“If he stays focused, he can reach the top.” I believe he will have a successful career.”

Is the Rangers a good location to start your career?

The Saints are led by ex-Rangers defender Russell Martin, and Mason Holgate does not appear to be a fan of the Championship team for whatever reason.

The transfer rumours come at a time when Rangers could need defensive reinforcements after a string of injuries disrupted the club’s backline in recent seasons.

Despite having the greatest defensive record in Scotland this season, there are concerns over Connor Goldson, Leon Balogun, Ben Davies, and John Souttar’s availability and longevity.

Rangers might potentially be a suitable fit for Mason Holgate; the Ibrox club has proven to be a solid alternative for English players who have lost their way in order to help them rediscover their love for the beautiful game.

Since Carlo Ancelotti made those comments about Mason Holgate last season, the Ibrox-linked defender’s career has progressively stalled.

That season, the future Jamaican international defender made 32 games for the Italian boss, who briefly designated Holgate captain, and the next two seasons saw the centre-back earn a further 43 appearances in the English Premier League.

But, with opportunities few last season (Holgate made only eight Premier League games), a season in the Championship with Southampton beckoned this year.

Could the defender be the next Todd Cantwell, Jack Butland, or perhaps Dujon Sterling to join Philippe Clement’s side in Glasgow?

Some fans are still upset at the opportunity to sign an ex-Chelsea star, who has now been compared to Diego Maradona, in similar circumstances.
