Southampton battle with Rangers over Everton shooter’

It has been reported that Everton are weighing up a January transfer move that will seriously impact Southampton

The Everton defender is presently on loan at Southampton as part of a deal with the Premier League club.

However, Football Insider reports that the Toffees are seriously considering terminating that deal during the January transfer window.

Holgate has battled for playing time at St. Mary’s, appearing in just five games since signing from Merseyside.

Boro and Watford have both been connected with signing the 27-year-old centre-back in the new year, as have other Championship clubs.

Martin responds to Holgate speculation

Martin has stated that Southampton would prefer to keep Holgate beyond the January transfer window, appreciating his contribution to the team.

However, the Saints manager has conceded that he would understand if Everton chose to seek a transfer elsewhere in order to give him more playing time.

“He is out of the team because the other guys have played well, and that is frustrating for him,” Martin told the Daily Echo.

“I can’t say he’s certainly staying here.

“Do we really want him to stay?” Yes.

“He’s a great teammate, he’s got a lot of energy around here, and he’s been playing well lately.”

“However, I understand that he probably wants to play more minutes, and I’m sure it’s frustrating for Everton as well.”

“I am sure there will be conversations between Jason [Wilcox], Everton, and maybe Mason’s agent at some point.”

So far this season, Holgate has been a backup to Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Jan Bednarek.

Martin has used that combo for the majority of the season, especially because Jack Stephens has struggled with fitness.

Holgate’s possible exit would leave Southampton looking pretty weak in that area as they seek promotion to the Premier League.
