‘This has never happened before’ – Wyness slam ‘useless’ chief in new Everton points deduction twist’

Former Everton chief Keith Wyness has insisted Premier League chair Alison Brittain is “useless” if she doesn’t get involved in the controversy surrounding alleged financial breaches by clubs

Speaking on the latest episode of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old, who was CEO at Goodison Park from 2004 to 2009 and now operates a football consultancy advising elite clubs, lambasted Brittain’s recent absence from the select committee hearing in Whitehall.

Premier League CEO Richard Masters and EFL head Rick Parry were questioned by the Culture, Media and Sport Committee at a select committee meeting on Tuesday – the day after Nottingham Forest and Everton were charged with breaching Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

However, top-flight chairman Brittain was not in Whitehall.

The 58-year-old joined the Premier League last year (2023), after quitting the CEO role at Whitbread, which owns Costa Coffee and Premier Inn.

Everton has already received a 10-point deduction this season for breaking PSR regulations, the most severe punishment in Premier League history.

Wyness told Football Insider“This is the first time that the Premier League has done a 10-point deduction.

“Here we are at a select committee, and the chair of the league isn’t even getting involved.

“Is it because she doesn’t understand the detail? Why wasn’t she a part of the select committee?

“Rick Parry was, the head of the EFL – so why wasn’t the chair of the Premier League there?

“Is it because she doesn’t understand, or doesn’t really have a view? We’ve got to hear from the chairman.

“This is a very serious thing, and without hearing from her – she’s useless, as far as I’m concerned.

“What’s her role if she’s not getting involved in an issue this big?”

In other news, Everton ‘very confident’ of using PL loophole to avoid second deduction.
