The 20-year-old made his Premier League debut for the Eagles last season but is now expected to spend the 2024/25 campaign out on loan, with two additional EFL sides keen to land him as well as Exeter.
Whitworth began the campaign with Crystal Palace’s U21s in the Premier League 2, making 18 appearances and keeping four clean sheets. He also featured twice in the EFL Trophy and averaged five saves per match.
However, towards the end of the campaign, Whitworth was handed his Premier League debut during Crystal Palace’s clash with local rivals Brighton before starting days later against Arsenal.
In total he made 22 appearances in all competitions, keeping four clean sheets in what was his first exposure to first-team football in his career to date.
Which other clubs are interested?
Viljami Sinisalo, a loanee from Exeter City, just said farewell, so the team will be looking for a new number one for the upcoming campaign. Shrewsbury Town, a League One team, is likely to add two goalkeepers this summer, so Exeter City will have competition.
Doncaster Rovers, managed by Grant McCann, have also entered the battle to take the 20-year-old on loan after learning that Thimothee Lo-Tutala, their star loan player, will not be playing for the team again in 2019.
Would Exeter be a good fit?
Exeter City have a proud history when it comes to developing young talents, whether that is loanees or academy graduates. In recent years we have seen the likes of Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa), Matt Grimes (Swansea) and Jay Stansfield (Fulham) all standing out on the Devonshire side.
Whitworth would likely sign as the club’s number one for next season, almost guaranteeing him plenty of first-team football which he is likely to need at this stage of his professional career.
