Sunderland have a decision to make as to whether to loan out the youngster this summer ahead of the next campaign. The prospect has been on the books at the Stadium of Light for the past four years after signing for them back in 2020.
The Black Cats granted Kelly, 20, his first professional deal in 2022, and it lasted until this year. On the other hand, his present club just declared that they had exercised their option to keep him on the retained list.
Journalist Nixon stated on his Patreon that Halifax wants to entice him to the National League in the most recent update on his circumstances. The Yorkshire team placed seventh in the previous campaign, however they were defeated by Solihull Moors in the play-offs.

Prior to his move to Sunderland, Kelly had spells in the academies at Manchester City and Salford City. He also had a brief stint at the Football Flick Academy.
The Ireland-born man scored seven goals in 34 games for the Black Cats Under-18’s side before stepping up to the Under-21’s. He has since found the net on 11 occasions in 47 outings for the development squad, chipping in with 13 assists as well.
Kelly has played twice for the first-team but his pathway into the senior set-up is currently blocked due to the abundance of options in his position.
Consequently, it would be wise for him to temporarily relocate to Halifax as this would further his development.
He would benefit from moving to a squad in the fifth division that will be vying for promotion once more in order to gain some experience.

Kelly’s immediate future at Sunderland is likely to depend on the plans of their new manager.
They are still looking for Michael Beale’s long-term replacement following their dismal last campaign. On the last day, Mike Dodds’ tenure as interim manager came to an end.
