Cats coach makes The player in question fired*

Coach Chris Scott of Geelong has stated that his team is “open” to signing players from other teams, following rumours that the Cats were interested in disgraced former North Melbourne midfielder Tarryn Thomas.

The player in question was fired by the Kangaroos on the eve of the 2024 season, following an initial 18-match suspension for alleged inappropriate behaviour by the league. Thomas also vacated from controversy to controversy for a large portion of the 2023 season.

It follows Andrew Mackie, the manager of Geelong’s list, suggesting they would leave the door open for the problematic star.

According to Mackie, the Cats constantly consider players who have had “bumpy” careers to determine whether they might be a better match for their team.
“At times if you want to be in the market for players that are really talented and have that skill set, often if they become available to you, it means that something has been a little but bumpy for them along the way,” Mackie told SEN Radio. Kane Cornes supported the idea that the 23-year-old could make a major comeback if he went through Geelong.

“It would surprise me if the Cats hadn’t called Thomas yet,” Cornes remarked on Monday night’s episode of Nine’s Footy Classified.
“That connection to Geelong is the obvious one.”Currently, Scott, who has led the Cats to two championships, believes the team will constantly consider bringing in marginal players if they think they could contribute to their elite club environment.

“I believe that having an open mind is a good policy. Second chances are something we believe in,” Scott told reporters on Thursday.

The coach did clarify, though, that the team is not just accepting any player with a past of problems into the programme.
