The very romantic reason Geelong star has been allowed to fly to Italy mid-season.

Geelong rising star Oisin Mullin is unavailable for selection at any level this weekend – and he couldn’t be happier about it.

The Irish defender, 24, was granted close to a week’s leave from the Cats and landed in Italy on Tuesday ahead of his sister’s wedding.

He soon took to Instagram, posting a photo from the European holiday hotspot that he simply captioned ‘touristing’.

Mullin has played two AFL matches this year, following six appearances in his debut season last year.

The former Gaelic football superstar was originally slated to join the AFL heavyweights in 2022, but played another season for Mayo, where he was named Young Footballer of the Year for a second time.

He has since inked a contract extension with Geelong, which will see Mullin a Cat until at least 2025.

‘We acknowledge how courageous and brave the decision Oisín made to move to Australia,’ Geelong’s general manager, Andrew Mackie said after Mullin put pen to paper.

‘He has positively embedded himself into our football program and we are extremely happy with his development.’

It comes as Geelong remain unbeaten this season, and in ominous news for their rivals, captain Patrick Dangerfield is set to return on Saturday against the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba from a hamstring injury.

Veteran full forward Tom Hawkins will also play after being rested last week.
