Gillingham has decided to break ways with Stephen Clemence and is now looking for a new manager.
The Gills were ultimately six points short of a spot in the League Two play-offs this season.
Reporter Nixon has noted that Maher has come to the attention of authorities on his Patreon website.
Maher has been leading Southend United steadily lately, and his club placed ninth in the fifth division. Similar to Gillingham, the Shrimpers were unable to advance to the play-offs.
The 47-year-old played for the Gills for two years, from 2009 to 2011, playing 69 games across all competitions, although he also spent a significant portion of his playing career at Roots Hall.
Prior to hanging up his boots in 2015 and entering the coaching ranks with Chelmsford City, he also had periods with Oldham Athletic, Dagenham and Redbridge, Bray Wanderers, Whitehawk, and the Whitehawk.
After that, Maher worked as a youth coach at Southend United once again before joining Bristol Rovers in July 2019.
In 2021, he returned to the Shrimpers, and he hasn’t been back since.
He might be viewed by Gillingham as the player who can lead them into the upcoming season as they aim to get promoted to League One.
Maher would be a good fit for the Kent team because he is already familiar with the organisation, has shown his mettle in the lower division, and is prepared to advance.
It might be difficult to entice him away because he signed a new contract in December of last year.
