Omar Bogle of Newport County was the target of racist taunts from a Gillingham supporter on Saturday after the striker gave his team a 2-0 lead during their League Two match at Priestfield.
A Gillingham supporter who was spotted harassing Newport County striker Omar Bogle racially was promptly given a lifetime ban.
The 30-year-old striker was yards away from the advertising hoardings when a supporter, who Gillingham claims has now been detained, rushed towards them after Bogle had given Newport a 2-0 lead in the first half of their League Two match at Priestfield on Saturday. The man then made a monkey motion at the player.
Many of Bogle’s teammates interrupted their festivities by pointing out the fan. Referee Tom Reeves spoke with Newport captain Ryan Delaney and the insulted player right away. He then proceeded to the touchline to report the matter to the matchday steward, the fourth official, and the management of both teams.
Gillingham’s head of operations confirmed that action had been taken on social media during the second half. “Horrible behaviour from a single person in Rainham End,” Gills manager Joe Comper said on X, the previous Twitter platform.
“Arrested and banned from Priestfield for life. Can’t thank the throngs of nearby stadium supporters who are obviously just as furious as we are. We sincerely appreciate your help.
Anti-racism group Kick It Out published the following in a statement following the game: “We are aware of the terrible abuse from a fan directed towards Newport forward Omar Bogle during Saturday’s League Two match at Gillingham.”
“In football, there is no place for so-called supporters like this, and offences like these should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. We stand behind Omar and let supporters know that racist actions won’t be accepted. Report it if you witness or hear it.”

“Realised what he was doing in 0.02 seconds, but the damage is done, and a lifetime ban is on the way,” stated another. No space for it. Well done, Newport players, for pointing him out right immediately, said a third.
Following the announcement that the fan had been banned, a Gills supporter also expressed gratitude to the police, our stewarding crew, and our loyal fans. At Priestfield, hate has no place.”
Another person said, “Good to hear, horrible to witness, couldn’t have been more clear on iFollow so horrible to be ashamed of the club I love.”
Bogle scored his second goal of the match, both of which came from the penalty spot, just before the racial taunts. After a challenging start to the season, Newport’s 2-0 victory puts them eight points clear of the relegation zone in the League Two standings. Meanwhile, Gillingham lost for the fourth time in six games following Neil Harris’s dismissal. Keith Millen, a former assistant at Crystal Palace, took over as caretaker.
