After a Newport County striker was allegedly subjected to racial taunts during a Gillingham FC game, a man was taken into custody.
Omar Bogle, a striker, looked to be abused by a Gillingham supporter as he celebrated his 20th-minute goal.
A man in his 20s was brought into police custody after being detained on suspicion of committing a racially sensitive public order offense, according to a statement from Kent police.
The Gillingham FC has called out the “racist gesture” and banned the offending fan for life.
“I think most people will have seen the clips on social media and I just wanted to reaffirm what action we have taken and our stance on this sort of behavior,” stated Joe Comper, the club’s director of operations.
People will notice today that we have a zero-tolerance policy based on the way we have responded.
“To be honest, we are quite annoyed and dissatisfied.
“We handled it in less than 30 seconds, and the offending individual was apprehended and detained by the police.”
Bogle thanked everyone who sent supportive words in a social media statement.
“Listen, this isn’t just a football issue; it’s a problem in life, as we always say,” he continued. Racism has no place here.”
“We strongly condemn the discriminatory and offensive incident involving a spectator during the fixture between Gillingham and Newport County,” a Football Association official stated on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“We are looking into the situation and will cooperate with the club and the appropriate authorities to make sure the right steps are done.”
“We are aware of the disgusting abuse from a fan directed towards Newport forward Omar Bogle during Saturday’s League Two match at Gillingham,” the anti-discrimination organization Kick It Out said on X.
“In football, there is no place for so-called supporters like them, and the harshest penalties are appropriate for offenses like this.
“We offer Omar our condolences and tell supporters that racist conduct will not be accepted. Report it if you witness or hear it.
