Robber who made armed raid on Gillingham bank ‘terrified’ public

Mohammed Basheeru, 44, has been jailed for his part in the crime

A guy who committed an armed robbery at a Gillingham bank has been punished. 44-year-old Mohammed Basheeru was imprisoned for his involvement in the crime.

At an earlier hearing, Basheeru, 44, also known as Sonni Reid, of London Road, Croydon, entered a guilty plea to robbery and was sentenced to 12 years in jail at Woolwich Crown Court on Friday, June 28. On Monday, February 14, at 11:26 a.m., police were contacted in reference to an armed robbery at a Gillingham high street bank.

The court heard that two males with face coverings entered the store and ordered the cashier to unlock the till while his partner was pointing a revolver at her. The two pilfered a large amount of cash and made off with the money down Venner Road, where they were seen by a witness.

Detectives from the Met’s Flying Squad seized CCTV footage which captured the two men four minutes later in a road close to the incident, leaving in a car, away from the scene. Officers established that the same vehicle was used to collect Basheeru from his home address before travelling towards the bank.
CCTV footage inside the bank showed suspects entering the bank. Officers were able to identify Basheeru using the footage by the slight deformity on his left ear, as he was already known to them.
