Amidst a 2-5 start with quarterback Jordan Love, general manager Brian Gutekunst of the Green Bay Packers reiterated his faith in the team’s long term trajectory.
According to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky, Gutekunst said that the Packers “haven’t had the results we wanted” in their first season without Aaron Rodgers.
“We’d like the results to come fast, don’t get me wrong,” he stated. However, the experiences they are having are significant, and they are going through them. It remains to be seen how we navigate through the challenges, but I have great faith in the group and the guys leading them. I believe that everyone is eager to see where these final ten games can take us.”
After three games, no one was considering him for a Hall of Fame jacket, but Love made promising returns right away. With two victories for Green Bay, he completed his passing for 655 yards, seven touchdowns, and one interception.
Since then, the first-year starter has not performed as well. Over the past five weeks, he has a 66.6 passer rating, five touchdowns, and eight interceptions.
The Packers’ situation with Love is already the focus of speculation. According to Albert Breer of the MMQB, the club is “smitten with Love as a person” but is less convinced about his quarterbacking prowess as of October 23.
When he told reporters on Wednesday that “these are going to be very important 10 games” towards judging Love, Gutekunst also made some cryptic remarks regarding the player.
Love was signed by the Packers until the 2024 campaign. It was significant, though, that they did not exercise the fifth-year option on his rookie contract, as Gutekunst had previously stated that it was “a lot of money for a guy who hasn’t played.”
The 25-year-old’s dead money is projected to be worth $5.5 million and $7 million for 2024 and 2025, respectively, so Green Bay may cut him in the winter and save $2.3 million.
It’s clear that the front office hasn’t decided on Love yet. Because of the way his deal is set up, it at least has the chance to alter QB if it thinks it’s necessary.
