Former Dundee United defender set to leave for Grimsby Town*

Third deadline day departure

Liam Smith, a defender for Cheltenham Town, has been loaned to Grimsby Town until the conclusion of the campaign.

On deadline day, he joins midfielder Curtis Thompson as the second Robins player to sign with the League Two team at Blundell Park.

Smith, 27, signed a one-year contract with Cheltenham last summer following a fruitful preseason trial.

After leaving Dundee United at the conclusion of the previous campaign, he was signed by Rangers, Hearts, and Ayr United.

Smith made 12 League One starts for Cheltenham, along with one appearance from the bench, operating primarily at right wing-back, but more recently at right centre-back.

Nathan Butler-Oyedeji returned to parent club Arsenal on the last day of the winter transfer window, making Smith’s move the latest in a string of three exits.

Thus far on Thursday, players who have moved in the opposite direction include defender Jack Shepherd, who is on loan from Barnsley, and strikers Matty Taylor (permanent, Forest Green Rovers) and Joe Nuttall (loan, Oldham Athletic).

Before the home League One match against Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday (3pm), two more fresh arrivals are probably going to be finalised.
