On Saturday, March 9, the city’s cathedral, library, and the Workhouse, Prison and Police and Courthouse museums will host the yearly Sights and Sounds of Ripon festival.
The free family day is hosted by North Yorkshire Council and other groups and runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. It celebrates local services and charities and emphasises the availability of guidance and assistance as well as volunteer opportunities.
North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for culture and the arts, Cllr Simon Myers, said: “The Sights and Sounds of Ripon will be a fantastic event and I am delighted the library is able to play its part.
“Events like this one are crucial for uniting people and showcasing the amazing work that nonprofit organisations and other services provide for everyone.”
The library offers free Lego clubs for kids under five, knitting and crocheting classes, information booths, and story times for young children and their families.
In the meanwhile, the cathedral will have activities for the whole family, including tours of the belltower, crafts and games for the kids, music by neighbourhood choirs, a pop-up café, and dance by Betty Lupton’s Ladle Laikers and the Ripon City Morris Dancers.
“We at Ripon Cathedral are always delighted to host the annual Sights and Sounds event, bringing together many groups and organisations who are working together so fruitfully for the benefit of everyone,” stated the Very Revd John Dobson, the dean of the church.
“This shows a thriving community where many come together to improve things.
In addition, anyone presenting evidence of address within the HG4 postcode region will receive free admission to all three museums.
There will also be poetry readings at each location that are influenced by Ripon and the larger North Yorkshire region.
On the North Yorkshire Council, Cllr. Andrew Williams, who represents Ripon Minster and Moorside, stated that Sights and Sounds of Ripon was a well-liked event on the city’s calendar.
“Ripon prides itself on its community spirit, and this event embodies that fact,” stated Mr. Williams.
“Seeing so many individuals from all walks of life come together to showcase everything the city has to offer will be fantastic.””I’d like to invite everyone to come down and see how they can help. Our local services and charities are very important to our residents and their families on a daily basis.”
The event excites Cllr Barbara Brodigan, who is the council representative for Ripon Ure Bank and Spa on the North Yorkshire Council.
“Anything that promotes Ripon and the wonderful assets that we have in the city is to be welcomed,” stated Mrs. Brodigan.
Both locals and visitors alike place a great importance on the cathedral, library, and museums, which are all quite active in our town.
“It’s amazing that we can use these locations for this thrilling event.”
