Hartlepool United Close In On National League Midfielder

Hartlepool United are reportedly closing in on a deal to sign Halifax Town midfielder Jack Hunter this summer, according to journalist Rob Law.

The 26-year-old played an important role for the Shaymen last season as the club clinched their place in the National League play-off places but it now appears as though Hunter will be moving onto a new chapter before the 2024/25 National League season begins.

Hunter made 44 league appearances for Halifax last season, starting 37 of them. During that time, the midfielder scored once and helped his side to have the best defensive record in the National League last season.

In terms of his in-depth statistics, Hunter finished the campaign with an 85% pass success rate within the National League whilst also averaging 8.5 ball recoveries and 3.5 interceptions per 90 minutes.

How important would this signing be for Hartlepool

During the 2023/24 season, Hartlepool failed to lodge a challenge for the play-off places, finishing the campaign in 12th but sat closer to the relegation zone than the top seven.

The club are under new management with the arrival of Darren Sarll following the departure of Kevin Phillips and will likely adopt a four-back system next season based on his approach during his time with Woking.

Hunter is a central midfielder but in terms of a tactical approach, his lack of goal contributions suggests that he is the one who’s more likely to sit back whilst the other central midfielder joins the attack, which could improve Hartlepool’s defensive structure.

Would a move to Hartlepool benefit Hunter?

Hunter experienced a lot of game time and made the play-offs last season with Halifax Town, meaning there is added pressure onto his move to Hartlepool if that does go through.

However, Hartlepool are under new management and have already let a lot of players leave the club, suggesting the side are likely to have almost an entirely new team ahead of the new campaign.

Being part of a new project as well as joining a club with plenty of EFL experience could have been a factor that’s too important to turn down for Hunter.
