Coach Sam Mitchell vents frustrations on team

At his team’s first home game of the 2024 season this Saturday, Hawthorn Senior Coach Sam Mitchell says he hopes to see a large turnout of the brown and gold supporters.

Sam Mitchell, the senior coach at Hawthorn, says he is excited to see the brown and gold supporters in large numbers this Saturday at his team’s first MCG game of the year.

At his press conference on Thursday, Mitchell stated, “A lot of people will come out and see us for our first home game… we’ll do our best to put on a good show for you.”

“We always feel like we have really good support at the games, and last week was an Essendon home game, but there were 73,000 in attendance.” “I’m rapt with the response from our fans.”

On the challenge against Melbourne

“We’ve worked hard during the preseason to try and give ourselves an opportunity to winnable situations more frequently, and we were successful in doing so last week. This week presents another challenge—Melbourne is undoubtedly among the top teams in the league. This is a great opportunity for us to eliminate one of the top teams in the competition because, in my opinion, as a team, we need to give ourselves opportunities to defeat strong teams. Though we have played well against them in the past few years, we haven’t been able to shut them out, so I’m really excited about the chance to play against a top team on a Saturday at the MCG in the afternoon.

On last week’s loss to Essendon

We looked at the game last week and there was a lot of missed opportunities. We did play in a manner that gave us a chance to win and we talked in pre-season about consistency and making sure we were putting ourselves in more winnable positions and we were certainly in the that for majority of the game last week. I think the clearance battle did hurt us last week particularly on the scoreboard.”

On James Sicily

“I’m really happy that James Sicily is available to play this week. He’s one of our best players and helps us every week. We will now only concentrate on what is in front of us and have moved past last week. It gives me great confidence that he has everything he needs in his kit bag right now to ensure that he can play well on the pitch and lead well while doing so. He is aware that he must play to the best of his abilities and adhere to the game’s rules.
