Naismith in quadruple Hearts injury update as Craig Halkett sent for scan’

Halkett, Kenneth Vargas, Yutaro Oda and Barrie McKay are all in the treatment room

Hearts defender Craig Halkett has been sent for a scan to determine the extent of his most recent injury, according to Steven Naismith.

The 28-year-old goalie had to be replaced just 26 minutes into Sunday’s Scottish Cup match against Airdrieonians due to a knee injury. Despite receiving medical attention on the pitch, Halkett—who provided Kenneth Vargas with an incredible assist—was unable to continue.

The former Livingston centre back has only recently resumed playing after missing a year due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury, so this is worrisome news for him. Today, Halkett will get a medical examination, and the Jambos are anxious to hear the results.

“He is getting a scan today, so we will wait and see how that goes,” he said to the Edinburgh Evening News. It’s quite typical. The first thing we’re going to do is scan it when a player discloses his feelings. He was merely experiencing some discomfort in his knee; it wasn’t the injury that prevented him from playing last year.”

Costa Rican forward Vargas is also nursing an injury problem after being withdrawn at the break at the Excelsior Stadium. Naismith said: “Kenneth came off because he had a tight groin. With the scoreline and where we were in the game, we just felt it was best to do that. He will be assessed over the next couple of days but I would expect him to be training as normal later in the week.”

Yutaro Oda missed the 4-1 victory over Airdrie, therefore it’s unclear if he will play this weekend against Motherwell. After taking a head bump during practice, the Japanese star had a concussion, and Naismith stated the team was keeping an eye on his recuperation.

“Yutaro was out with a concussion,” he continued. He is undergoing the protocol for concussions. We’ll wait and see how he does over the next several days to see whether or not he is available for the weekend. You are only able to work with him for so long before monitoring him the following morning to see how he is feeling and whether he is ready to move on to the next phase.”

Last but not least, Barrie McKay, who suffered a knee injury during December’s victory at Easter Road, might return to duty next month.
