Hearts manager Steven Naismith has wished Rangers youngster Alex Lowry all the best for the future after cutting short the midfielder’s loan deal at Tynecastle.

The 20-year-old playmaker has impressed in flashes at Hearts this season after joining the club on six-month loan deal back in the summer.

With a decision to be taken on the loan come January, Hearts have sent Alex Lowry back to Rangers where he’ll likely go out on loan again in the window.

In total, Alex Lowry made 19 appearances for Hearts in the first half of the season, scoring once in the League Cup victoty over Kilmarnock.

Alex Lowry returns from Hearts loan

Speaking after the deal for the Rangers Academy graduate was cut short, Hearts boss Steven Naismith has been heaping the praise on Alex Lowry.

Claiming that competition for places meant he could not guarantee Lowry minutes at Tynecastle, the former Rangers striker has tipped the kid to go on to become a “top player”.

“We took the decision to end the loan with Alex’s best interests in mind,” Naismith told the official Hearts website.

“There is absolutely no doubting Alex’s talents as a player, and he’s shown in periods what he’s capable of doing on the pitch.

“But with the competition for places fierce in our squad, he’s probably not going to get the game time that would allow him to develop further, which is one of the reasons he was here in the first place.

“I’ve no doubt he’ll go on to become a top player. He’s a great boy, we thank him for all his efforts at Hearts and wish him well for the future.”

Loan transfer beckons for Rangers talent

Whilst it remains unclear where Alex Lowry will be heading next, it’s a huge opportunity for a club to secure the services of the attacking midfielder in the short-term.

Long-tipped to one of the Ibrox club’s brightest Academy prospects, injury hampered Alex Lowry after his breakthrough into the first-team squad and he’s struggled to regain a foothold since.

One suspects Rangers manager Philippe Clement will look to assess Lowry’s development come the end of the season but in the meantime another short-term move beckons.

Rangers meanwhile continue to be linked with a move for Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland, who has been offered a new contract at Tynecastle.
