The Hearts challenge set for Alan Forrest as Steven’

The winger is at the top of his game and scooped the Premiership’s player of the month

After raising his game in answer to Steven Naismith’s challenge, Alan Forrest has been informed he can take centre stage at Hearts.

The Jambos winger, who recorded four assists—two against Livingston and two against Dundee—contributed to the team’s scorching form and was named the Premiership’s January player of the month. Since then, he has added a goal and four assists to his season total in the rematch at the Dee.

His Edinburgh derby wonderstrike against Hibs earlier in the season seemed to kickstart a great run of form and he’s been a key figure in the team that has stormed clear in third. It comes after a stop-start debut campaign in maroon which had a fast start but saw him fall back into being more of a squad rotation option.

When Forrest took over as manager, Naismith acknowledges that his major weakness was a lack of consistency, and he set Forrest the task of being a crucial player, as he had been at Ayr and Livingston before.

The manager said: “Consistency, that is the biggest thing. Alan has always been somebody who has got good ability. More so in training, you would see it. His attitude and workrate are second to none. But then in games you would say, ‘he was ineffective today’. From when we took over last season, that was the biggest thing.

“I said to him, ‘Al, you are a dream pro in terms of your attitude and how you work but you are not young. You are at the point you need to be an experienced player who is a first-team player, not a squad player
