Hibs defender future amid Manchester United January recall

The Englishman was tested in an unfamiliar role following Lewis Miller’s red card against Dundee, but held on for an important victory as he continues to develop himself further with the Hibees.

Will Fish has insisted he would ‘love’ to stay put at Hibs rather than seek a return to his parent club Manchester United in the January window.

The 20-year-old believes Nick Montgomery’s side have a strong chance of bagging a top three finish this season after moving up to fifth with a 2-1 victory over Dundee on Saturday. Fish’s current United contract runs until summer 2025 with an option to extend it having spent over a season-and-a-half in the Scottish top flight, but the English Premier League heavyweights could cut his loan short.

According to the Edinburgh Evening News, the team may decide to transfer him abroad to further his development rather than returning him to Old Trafford early. Fish acknowledged the existence of an official recall clause in his contract, saying, “To be honest with you, those discussions haven’t been had yet, but I think they do.” That’s not something I’m proactively trying to accomplish.”

“100%,” he said, expressing his wish to remain in Leith and if he had been settled. I think the squad is headed in the right path and I’m liking the football style.

That’s something I would love to do if I stay here. Although the season is still very early, I believe that with a few more adjustments and building on our leads, we can contend for the third position under the manager, his coaching staff and his style of play.”

The center-back, who has participated in every one of Montgomery’s 12 games as head coach of the Hibees, has developed into a vital member of their defence while honing his execution skills.

Despite Owen Beck’s late goal for Dundee, Lewis Miller’s red card put Hibs in danger at Dens Park, forcing Fish to play wide and in an unfamiliar position. Fortunately for the Englishman, his team managed to hold on for a 2-1 triumph.

This is something we haven’t been doing lately. We’ve lost a couple of leads,” Fish remarked in response to a question about turning in a significant win.
