Nick explains Hib ‘bad day at office’ as lack of urgency cost run’

The Hibees had been on a decent run of form but fell to defeat at McDiarmid Park

Hibs’ Saturday defeat to St Johnstone was described as a “bad day at the office” by Nick Montgomery.

Montgomery’s side were defeated 1-0 by Craig Levein’s side at McDiarmid Park, leaving the manager dissatisfied with his players’ lack of attacking intensity despite a recent solid run in Premiership competition. Dylan Levitt’s error led to Graham Carey’s eventual winner, although Monty cleared his player of culpability.

Instead he opted to focus on the squad as a whole and their inability to break down their opponents long enough to seal another three points. “It’s a bad day at the office for us,” he told Hibs TV. I thought the game started well, they sat in and we had a lot of the ball but we didn’t do enough with it. We lacked urgency attacking-wise as a team and it felt like we were waiting to score a goal.

“You could sense that a mistake from either team would probably break the deadlock and unfortunately that was us today.”

Monty added: “We reacted a bit too late, we had opportunities to put balls into the box but we didn’t do that towards the end and nothing seemed to fall for us today.

“That is no excuse; we must give them credit; they capitalised on a mistake and defended tenaciously.” We just couldn’t get back into the game, and we’re sad about that.

We must acknowledge that we were not good enough today, accept loss, and begin preparing for next week. We had some good periods of play, but we just didn’t have enough as a team to produce any serious opportunities.

“We needed a little more urgency and a little more faith.” The players in there understand that we can and must improve.”
