Montgomery reckons Marshall is still ‘top class’ after his stunning performance kept Aberdeen at bay,
Nick Montgomery has seen David Marshall take a lot of stick but reckons this performance in Hibs’ 2-0 win over Aberdeen silenced his critics and showed he is still a top-class keeper.
The former Scotland No. 1 rolled back the years with a man of the match display over Aberdeen, which saw him make a string of stops and save a penalty from Bojan Miovski. Marshall has had his ups and downs at Easter Road but Montgomery knows he was big in getting these three points against Aberdeen that were sealed by Dylan Vente and Will Fish’s goals.
“We have to thank Davie Marshall, he is a top class custodian, I said that when I came to the club and nothing has changed,” Montgomery added. He stood tall and had several significant moments. “I thought his performance was summed up by his penalty save.”Back there, you need a cool head. It’s critical that you have good personalities on your team, and you won’t acquire more experience than David.
“He’s gotten a lot of stick in the past, but he’s a top-tier custodian, as he demonstrated today.” We also had chances that we could have converted, but 2-0, clean sheet, and coming into a difficult period, I’m obviously pleased with the outcome.”
Aberdeen manager Barry Robson stated his squad was superior, but Montgomery believes it was simply a role reversal of Hibs’ loss in the Viaplay Cup semi-final. Hibs are now four games unbeaten and have won three consecutive games for the first time since February. They are still fifth, two points behind third.
“He’s (Robson) probably disappointed they didn’t get anything out of the game,” Montgomery added. However, if you recall the semi-final, we were by much the better team and lost 1-0!
“So I’d say they were good today, and I’ll say that it wasn’t our prettiest performance. It’s important we get some momentum. It’s two clean sheets in three games.”
