The boss was in a reflective mood as January rolled around’

Nick Montgomery believes he has made progress at Hibs since taking over as manager, and believes he has helped “resurrect careers” during his tenure.

The Easter Road boss was in an introspective mood as he reflected on his time in command since taking over in September. The Englishman implemented a new style of play with an emphasis on attack, and players who had previously been frozen out were welcomed back into the fold with open arms and a new outlook.

Montgomery is proud of that element of his leadership thus far, and he believes that, with the January transfer window now open, things are only just getting started under his watch.

“It is a journey that I came on and a challenge I took on,” he told the Evening News. “I came into a club that was second from bottom and lost three of the first four games. And since then, two weeks ago we were one point off third position – and two weeks later we’ve lost two games of football, one in the 94th minute, one to a below par performance against St Johnstone.

“However, when I look back on my time here, I see a lot of progress.” We have given our game a new identity, and I have rejuvenated the careers of players like Jair Tavares, who was not even considered a first-team player. Rory Whittaker, the club’s youngest player, made his debut, and Josh Landers and Rudi Molotnikov made appearances.

“When I look at it, I believe there has been progress.” There have been far too many draws and games in which we have lost points from positions of strength. In terms of points, I’d want to be further up the table, but we’re on the right track.

“Hopefully in this window we can bring some players in because we are light on bodies at the minute. I can’t control the boys who are injured or not available. I can only control the squad I’ve got. It has been ups and downs, but that is normal and part of the process. I will continue to keep working hard and try to improve the squad in January – and then try to finish the season strongly.”
